The museum of Montemonaco was established in the previous church of San Biagio (Saint Blaise), an old building of worship that dates back to the Roman era that is located close to the actual parish church. The church had long been unused, but has now found use once again thanks to recent renovations that have allowed for, among other things, the recovery of two valuable stone altars dating back to the XVI century.
The collection hosts numerous wooden sculptures originating from the area and includes a Crucifix from the XIII century from San Giorgio all’Isola; a Madonna of Abruzzese-Marchegian art from the beginning of the XVI century; some superb works of the seventeenth century created for the church of Tofe, such as the Guardian Angel and the Madonna of Loreto by Sebastiano Sebastiani as well as another sculpture of the same subject exhibited in Toronto in 2002 on the occasion of World Youth Day.
From the church of Vallegrascia comes a rare antependium in pressed and painted leather from the beginning of the XVII century, while in the church of Isola San Biagio a processional cross dated 1788 is exhibited.
Among the paintings, in addition to the Madonna del Soccorso (1521) by the Amandolese painter Giulio Vergari and the Madonna of the Rosary datable to the beginning of the XVI century, for the first time the recently discovered altarpiece with Saint Blaise and Sant’Antonio Abate are presented, attributed to Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1755).
This is an important early work that is added to the works left in the Marche by this Roman artist, native of Comunanza. Included among the important painters of his time is attested by his title from the Accademico di San Luca, as painter of the Apostolic Chamber. He was also granted protection by the popes and the most prestigious families of Urbe.
